In Estonia the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications is responsible for the general ICT coordination – more precisely the Department of State Information Systems. The tasks of the department include the coordination of state IT-policy actions and development plans in the field of state administrative information systems (IS):

  • state IT budgets,
  • IT legislation,
  • coordination of IT projects,
  • IT audits,
  • standardisation,
  • IT procurement procedures,
  • and international cooperation in the field of state IS.

The Estonian Informatics Centre, which is a subdivision of the ministry, is responsible for

  • the coordination and implementation of the development of state registers,
  • computer networks and data communication,
  • standardisation,
  • IT public procurement,
  • monitoring Estonian IT situation,
  • etc. 

There are also IT councils of ministries and IT councils of counties.
